30 Years of Red Pegasus: a Letter from our Founder
Share
This September, my beloved gift shop Red Pegasus marks an incredible milestone: 30 years as a hub for creativity, community, and Canadian craftsmanship.
I opened Red Pegasus in 1995 at just 30 years old, as a single mother with a vision to create a space that championed local and Canadian makers. Over the past three decades, that vision has evolved from a fashion-forward boutique into a thoughtfully curated general store, offering stationery, jewellery, homewares, bath & body products, and unique gifts. All with an emphasis on quality, creativity, and ethical production.
As sole owner, buyer, curator and operator, I’ve always seen Red Pegasus as more than a shop. It’s a place where creativity and community meet, and where everyone is welcome.
Since opening, the shop has been recognized in Toronto Life and NOW Magazine, winning their Best of Toronto Most Unique Gift Shop four times (back when handwritten ballots were mailed in)!
Through the recession of 2008, the shift to fast fashion, the ever-changing neighbourhood, and even the challenges of COVID-19, I'm so proud that Red Pegasus has remained a fixture in Toronto’s Little Italy, loved for its personal service, curated selection, and commitment to community.
This milestone is my love letter to Toronto – to the neighbourhoods that give the city its character, to the creators and makers, to the local entrepreneurs who pour their hearts into their work and leave their thumbprints on our streets. It’s also a love letter to small business and the stamina and strength it takes to survive as an independent retailer. No matter your age or stage in life, you can bring your unique gifts into the world and make a difference.
I see Toronto as a living web. Every small business is a vital thread in the city’s fabric. I hope my story inspires others to support their communities, their neighbourhoods, and the small businesses that keep the city’s spirit alive. Whether you’re running a small business, working in one, or simply choosing to shop local, you’re helping to keep Toronto diverse, inclusive, and welcoming to all.
Thank you for 30 years. I'm looking forward to many more!
Love,
Rachel
