Grassy Narrows Donation

About Grassy Narrows:

Asubpeeschoseewagong, or Grassy Narrows, is a First Nations community situated 80 kilometers north of Kenora, Ontario. Their traditional territory spans approximately 2,500 square miles. The community has lived sustainably for millennia, using the forests, rivers and lakes for physical, economic, cultural and spiritual sustenance. Many members of the community still depend on the land today for food as well as medicine. 

The Grassy Narrows community has been through many traumas including forced attendance in church-run residential schools, coerced relocation away from their traditional living areas, hydro damming flooding sacred sites and wild rice beds, mercury contamination, clearcut logging of their forests, and mining. These injustices span decades. Just this past year, a gold-mining firm has announced intentions to dump their wastewater upstream from Grassy Narrows. The chemicals found in that wastewater are expected to worsen the effects of the mercury poisoning.

In the face of this oppression, the people of Grassy Narrows are actively resisting the continued destruction of their territories, re-occupying their lands, reviving their culture and fighting for control over their lands and self-determination. 100% of proceeds from our anniversary fundraiser will go directly to Grassy Narrows to support them in their fight against injustice and land rights violations at the hands of the Ontario and Canadian government.
